Since the beginning of 2021, UK customers have experienced some changes in procedures and costs involved in EU purchases. Therefore, we will summarize the most important points to bear in mind when it comes to buying something from across the channel.

VAT

The Value Added Tax is a consumption tax assessed on the value added to goods and services.

This revenue is raised for the government and applies to the purchase of certain goods.

Prices shown at Aclam’s online store if you are connecting from a non-EU country will not include VAT, otherwise the 21% tax rate will be applied. 

So, I won’t be paying VAT to you?

No, VAT will be collected once the parcel goes through customs applying your local legislation, which we believe is a 20% for the UK.

Why do I have to pay VAT here?

Well, governments tend to need money to operate the country, o so they say.

CUSTOMS DUTIES

Import duties can range from 0% to 25% of the item’s value depending on what it is, what material it is made from and its declared value.

Since each country defines these duties according to many factors and considering that we send goods to many different countries with different approaches, we can’t keep track of all these potential charges.

However, if you get hold of a duty calculator and enter the HS codes of the items we sell, 8543.70.96.20 for effects pedals or 9209.92 for the pedalboards, according to a EU-UK Trade and Cooperation agreement there shouldn’t be any additional custom duties charge.

Aclam will specify the nature of the goods but won’t be held responsible of unexpected charges raised by customs officials’ interpretation of their current legislation.

CONCLUSIONS

At the end of the day, the easiest way to know what’s going on is to ask customers who have already gone through the experience, so that’s what we did.

The vast majority of customers asked about this stated they only had to pay VAT or import taxes (20%), but no additional customs fees.

Be aware that the shipping fees you pay to Aclam cover the item’s handling and shipping with the selected carrier, but never additional charges or fees determined by customs in the destination country.
