IT STARTED WITH A RARE VOX UL730 UNIT

The origin of Dr. Robert & The Mocker

Explore the Story

THE AMP BEHIND THE BEATLES TONE

The VOX UL730. A rare and forgotten amplifier.

In 1966, VOX introduced something different. These amps were used by The Beatles during Revolver & Sgt. Pepper's, shaping some of the most distinctive guitar tones ever recorded.

For years, many assumed those sounds came from fuzz pedals. They didn't

FINDING A VOX UL730

A long search, full of setbacks

Only 100 units were ever produced. Most of them returned and destroyed. Only a handful are thought to remain.

It wasn't easy, but we finally found one.

It wasn't perfect. But it was real.

REVERSE-ENGINEERING THE VOX UL730

What we found inside wasn’t expected

The original schematics didn’t match the actual circuit. Component values were different. Some parts had been modified over time.

Marc had to reverse-engineer the entire amplifier from scratch to get the real VOX UL730 tone.

That’s when things made sense ↓

THE UL730 ORIGINAL TONE

Dr. Robert

Capturing the UL730 wasn’t just about recreating a sound. It was about bringing its response, dynamics and character into something you can actually play.

After months of prototyping, we recreated the normal channel of the amp. Staying true to its character while pushing it further. That became Dr. Robert.

THE UL730 MISBIASED FUZZ

The Mocker

While comparing our UL730 fuzz with other units, we noticed something strange. Ours didn’t sound the same. It was more gated. More spluttery.

Marc traced it back to a component that had drifted out of spec over time, altering the fuzz circuit. That sound was special. We found some N.O.S. diodes. That became The Mocker

ONE AMP. TWO PEDALS.

Two paths from the same origin

It started with a forgotten amplifier. What we found inside it led us in two different directions.

Now, you decide ↓

Dr. Robert
Dr. Robert Pedal
  • Based on the normal channel of our VOX UL730 S/N 3042
  • Artwork by Klaus Voormann, artist behind Revolver
  • “Mach Schau!” gain inspired by the amp pushed to its limits

The Mocker
The Mocker Pedal
  • Based on the fuzz circuit of our VOX UL730 S/N 3042
  • Captures both: The original fuzz and our unit’s misbiased character
  • Built using rare N.O.S. Philips OA200 diodes, just like the original
